Hard Truths

Drama

Pansy struggles to control her all-consuming fury with the world while her husband and son move away from, rather than towards, her.

Hard Truths is a bleak yet exquisitely observed character study. We follow the subjects over a couple of days and there's no plot as such, rather, the movie is a series of meticulously created scenes. It's at once horrifying and heartbreaking to observe the characters doing their best while ravaged by the protagonist's wretched state, a desolation beyond melancholy. All credit goes to the cast for every facial twitch, wince and tear, but most accolades need to be reserved for the director and the unflinching interrogation of his camera. The sounds of silence.
